Dr Tobias Capwell

Dr. Tobias Capwell FSA is an internationally-acknowledged authority on Medieval and Renaissance arms and armour. He is the author of many books, including The Real Fighting Stuff: Arms and Armour at Glasgow Museums (2006); Masterpieces of European Arms and Armour at the Wallace Collection (2011; Apollo Magazine Book of the Year 2012); Arms and Armour of the Medieval Joust (2018); and Arms and Armour of the Renaissance Joust

As an author Toby is perhaps best known for his three-volume, 1100-page work Armour of the English Knight, published in 2015, 2021 and 2022.

Toby also appears regularly on broadcast and online television, most recently in three episodes of the Business Insider series How Real is It?  He was armour advisor and co-presenter on Richard III: The New Evidence (2014; C4), and writer-presenter of Metalworks: The Knight’s Tale (2012; BBC4).

A fighter as well as a writer, Toby has been jousting and fighting in full-plate armour for thirty years, and has taken part in major jousts and tournaments all over the world. He strives to bring his wide experience as a practitioner of medieval and Renaissance martials arts to bear in his academic work, combining traditional scholarship with combat experience.  

In 2015 Toby had the unusual honour of serving as one of the two fully armoured horsemen escorting the remains of King Richard III, from the battlefield at Bosworth to their final resting place in Leicester Cathedral.
